Parkstad Limburg

The borders of Limburg have had a long and fluid history of shifting over time. Today, 351 km of the province’s border is bounded by foreign soil, whilst only 113 km of its length connects with the rest of the Netherlands, so it’s no wonder that inhabitants of the province have had a tendency for peering over the garden fence.  An international outlook and an acceptance of open borders is in their DNA. It is wrapped up in the history of the province and been instrumental in putting it on the map. It is in Limburg that the mountains begin – after all, landscape doesn’t suddenly stop at a political frontier. South Limburg is an upland region which is a northern outlier of what is known as the Rhenish Massif or Slate Mountains. As such, Dutch Mountain Film Festival lies at the foot of these mountains …

Why not make a long weekend of your visit to the DMFF? If you want a taste of the outdoors, you can stay overnight in a “bothy” run by the St. Willibrord Scouts in Kerkrade. At just €5.20 per person per night, what more could you wish for? There are two dormitories for 25 persons. Don’t forget to bring your sleeping bag and mat, as well as making your booking here >

If it’s peace and quiet in the countryside you’re looking for, look no further than Bergdorpje Vijlen! Perhaps you’d prefer to take yourself for a spin on the piste after all those films? If so, check in to Hotel Snowworld in Landgraaf.

Have you ever imagined sleeping in an ancient monastery? Abdij Rolduc in Kerkrade is just perfect for this! Rolduc Abbey is the largest monastery complex in the Benelux and is in the top 100 most important monuments on the Netherlands UNESCO heritage sites. Located in the valley of the river Worm, which marks the boundary with Germany, the abbey is a perfect base for the DMFF.
